Made of Human - The Language of Parts in Therapeutic Practice

Date: 2nd March 2024

Description: Join us for an enlightening seminar designed to deepen your understanding and application of the “parts of self” concept in therapeutic practice.

Since the visual metaphor of an angel and demon perched on someone’s shoulders first graced a cartoon in 1916, the notion that individuals harbour multiple voices and perspectives has captivated minds.

This session, underpinned by the pioneering work of Dr. Richard Schwartz, invites practitioners to explore these multifaceted aspects of the self. By engaging with this concept, therapists can enhance their ability to acknowledge and integrate a broader spectrum of their clients’ experiences, navigate through challenging emotions, and identify obstacles to wellbeing. The ancient Greeks first toyed with the idea of a composite self, a theory which has since been refined by countless philosophers and counselling theorists.

Our seminar, led by Jay Treryth, an experienced counsellor and tutor with Connect, will blend presentation with practical exercises and discussion, encouraging personal reflection and a deeper engagement with these transformative ideas.

Whether you’re a counselling student or a seasoned practitioner, this seminar offers valuable insights into harnessing the power of the “parts of self” concept to foster personal growth and therapeutic breakthroughs.

.
Dependency in Counselling: Part 1 of 2

It is common for counsellors to feel concerned about clients becoming ‘too attached’ and to feel confused about how close to get to clients often debating what level of intimacy is appropriate.

Some of this will be rooted in our own personal histories and attachment stories and some of it will be informed by the ongoing debate on what the therapeutic relationship should be.

The two sessions will explore what dependency in counselling means, our personal reactions to the word and the potential ethical issues and risks associated.

We will discuss the ideas of Donald Winnicott and other Object- Relations theorists on the impact of unmet dependency needs in childhood and how this affects us in adulthood. We will then consider clinical applications and how to support our clients with these issues, including how we use ourselves to offer a reparative therapeutic encounter.

The sessions will be 2 hours with a break in the middle, the format will include a combination of taught (slides), interactive discussions and small group work. The topic will require you to engage, reflect and share thoughts and feelings both on a personal and professional level.

Working Creatively in Counselling

Are you ready to unlock new possibilities in your counselling practice? Our upcoming seminar, Working Creatively in Counselling, invites you to explore the power of creativity in supporting clients through unique challenges.

Building on the themes of diversity and difference covered in our previous sessions, this interactive two-and-a-half-hour seminar will delve into creative techniques that can bridge gaps when words fall short. You’ll examine how modalities and theory can be applied creatively, consider tools like playdough, drawing, and timelines, and learn to use objects as powerful representations.

Whether dealing with language barriers, misunderstandings, or age differences, these techniques can help you connect with clients on a deeper level. Join us for an inspiring session designed to enrich your counselling toolkit and ignite your passion for innovative, compassionate practice.

Please could attendees bring: playdough (if possible); a string or ribbon; as well as two lots of any item they can bring as representations, e.g. handful of stones and leaves, different coloured buttons or smarties / M&Ms.

Note: Recordings are typically available within 7 days of the live seminars taking place, and do not contain any content deemed to be too personal in nature. During the live sessions, the tutor will use virtual ‘breakout rooms’ for more in-depth group discussions, which are not recorded. These breakouts provide an excellent opportunity for the exploration of topics, and are therefore a great benefit to attending the sessions live on the day.
